Work Life Balance

An article posted on the Standford University Business School blog, “Don’t Sell Yourself Short” talks about having the courage to make tough choices and thinking twice before leaving the workforce. “And, if you decide to leave, strategize your comeback.”

One alum, Christiana Shi, decided not to leave the workforce and later became the first woman to make partner at McKinsey & Co. while working part time.

Shi, a graduate of Standford, started at McKinsey in 1988. After returning from maternity leave, she heard about job sharing at Hewlett Packard and brought the idea to McKinsey. Initially, she started working 4 days a week for a period of six months. After the first six months, some noticed and others forgot about the part-time schedule. Shi states, “The road wasn’t easy, but now other women have made partner after working part time.

Interestingly enough on the same site, there’s a link to Jack Welch’s article entitled, “No Such Thing as Work Life Balance” published in the Wall Street Journal online edition, July 2009.

Stanford Graduate School of Business blog provides a collection of articles, research and a wealth of knowledge on Corporate Boards, Diversity, Women Executives and Work Life Balance.
