Ten Conversation Starters: Helping your team find purpose

Consider how you contribute to the health and well-being of your team? Take a few minutes to make a list of each team member and take an objective look at the quality of your conversations and your working relationship. Some will be more productive than others.

Next choose one of the following questions to ask someone on your team. You don’t need to plan for a formal meeting nor go through every question, as this is a conversation.

Keep it informal, go for a (virtual) coffee, select a question and see what happens. Be present, show interest, listen and probe for more details asking, ‘’why do you think that? or ‘’can you tell me more about….?

  6. What strengths do you see in others that you’d like to have?
  7. What are you looking forward to this year?
  8. Who else would you like to have in your network as a though partner for your career?
  9. If you were to teach, what subject would that be?
  10. What would you regret not doing in your career — life?

Your goal is to build trust, and help your team find purpose at work. Once you’ve established trust, there are more challenging questions to ask. More exercises and questions can be found in this book, Now It’s Clear: the Career You Own
