Confusion begets confusion until we reach enlightenment. Sound new age-y?
Last week’s blog, “When Passion Runs Out”, apparently hit a chord. I received responses ranging from, “this topic could not be more timely,” “perfectly describes my situation,” or “very relevant but different circumstances.”
Having a career ‘your way’ can be done.
First take a step back to reflect. Yes, reflect. Not a month long retreat of silent meditation (although if you have the time, by all means do so) but just a few minutes out of your day to look back at pivotal events. An occurrence which changed you, or put you on a different path.
This very simple and reflective exercise helps to determine next steps, even if you’re currently stuck in survival mode. This action helps even if you’re blissfully happy in your role, as reflecting provides a guide to your future. It’s neither difficult nor time consuming. As you look back on these events, start connecting the dots.
On your way to or from work put down your smart phone, stop reading emails, and consider:
Why did you decide on “this” role?
What have you learned?
What does career success feels like?
These three simple questions offer insights. You can outgrow your goals, role, or organisation. Instead of focusing on why you feel unfulfilled, centre your attention on being fulfilled. Don’t play it safe, explore a new path.
