In HR Online, Jerene Ang’s article raises an interesting question.
Do employees have a preference for their Manager’s values versus the Organisation’s values?
Citing research from PERSOLKELLY’s latest APAC Workforce Insights report, 61% of Singaporean respondents revealed that workers favour their manager’s personal values over the broader values of the organisation when choosing whether to stay or seek opportunities elsewhere. Gallup’s chief scientist suggested the same in a 2017 survey noting that “75% of the reasons for voluntary turnover come down to things that managers can influence”.
Digging deeper into Ang’s article and Gallups research, we see that much of this has to do with careers. A career provides an avenue for self-fulfilment along with economic benefits. For purpose-oriented employees meaningful work often outweighs salary. Ang mentions “the need to fit into their team culture and feel a sense of belonging.”
