5 minutes with Rie

On International Women’s Day, the Horan Group Consultant Rie Rumito took part in the annual Women in Leadership Summit Singapore. We asked her to speak more about her experience there.

What stood out for you at the Women in Leadership Summit?

There were many accomplished women in their own fields who shared their experiences to encourage others, which was greatly inspiring. I particularly liked one of the statements made that we should strive for excellence, not equality.

It resonated with me because we should set our own standards and forget about benchmarking ourselves with anyone.  We often impose barriers on ourselves, be it stemming from social mirrors or norms that have past their relevance.

We should embrace and bring to bear the qualities we have in abundance such as empathy, compassion, and nurturing that will make organizations and the world a better place.  We should defend and protect those we believe in like a mother protect her offsprings, with love and a deep sense of responsibility, like what Jacinda Ardern does for her country.

When hosting the career discussion, what did you hear from the participants?

There seemed to be a shared bewilderment and readiness in equal measure in preparing ourselves for the unknowns brought about by disruptive technology and the shifting landscape of jobs, careers, and organisations.

We often dig for ways to up certainty when perhaps we ought to focus on equipping ourselves with the basic tools and building our resilience so that we will enjoy the ride and welcome new possibilities.
